Rant: Jet's promise

Rant: Jet's promise

>was just making a pass at soothing ruffled feathers when they told me they would take care of the extension bed problem with my Mini. They said "give us a few days" and that was back on Feb 22. I called them about a week or so ago (after not getting any response to my email) and they said "Well, we found that it is going to take a lot longer to do and we are really short handed right now. The extension was designed for the VS Mini and not the non-vs." Well if that's the case, why did they sell non-vs Minis with the holes for the extension pre-drilled (so you couldn't use the "mounting kit") and why did they advertise that the non-VS Mini could be extended with their bed extension? I am getting a little disgusted. I am in the process of researching DCs and I think I just might cross Jet off my list of choices. :(

End of rant.

When you first posted this months ago I sort of thought that Jet only made the bed extensions to fit the variable speed but I didn't say anything because I wasn't sure. I had heard that they were making an adaptor kit or some such thing to compensate. Oh well. Wish you luck in getting it resolved.

>I've had a few problems with different Jet equipment over the years. The most recent only last month. Every time, without fail, when I have called Jet with a problem, I have received nothing but the utmost quality service. Their service is one of the best I've encountered in recent years.

>They have an adapter kit, but it is my understanding that it includes a template that you use to drill holes in the mini to match the threaded holes in the extension. My lathe came with holes already drilled for the extension, but they were drilled about 3/32 off from where they should have been. If they hadn't drilled the holes to begin with so I could have used the template and drilled fresh holes where they should be, it would have been fine. The hole locations were not the only problem, I might add. They were all sweetness and light and responded almost immediately when I first contacted them so maybe I should give them a little more time.

>What other problems are you having? I'm curious because I have a non-VS Jet mini that I bought last July (when I started turning) and a bed extension purchased separately last fall. Just this afternoon I finally opened the box for the bed extension and bolted the it on. I had to file some casting flash so that the sheet metal l-bracket would engage the lathe bed, but otherwise everything appears to have bolted together perfectly - total installation including filing was about 20 minutes.

>I did not have to just file casting flash...the ways on the extension were thicker than the ways on the lathe. That makes for very difficult movement of the tailstock and banjo over the joint and causes a problem with poor adjustment of the lockdown cams when moving either the banjo or tailstock from the extension to the lathe. I am using the bed, but it is not satisfactory and it took a LOT of redrilling and filing to make it semi-useable. Jet agreed that it should not be like that. Did yours have the holes pre-drilled or did you use a mounting kit?

>Jet is not telling the whole story.

About 6 months before the VS lathe was available they were advertising the standard lathe with bed extension. I bought one at Woodcrafters and had nothing but problems similar to yours. They kept stringing me along until the warranty expired.

Guess what happened then.....

I'll have to check the thickness on the ways, as I noticed a slight chatch when sliding the tail stock over the joint.

>OK, posted in the wrong spot previously.

The holes on mine were predrilled and tapped.

I will hacve to check the thickness of the ways on mine because I noticed a slight catch as the tail stock goes over the joint.

>Yes I had to grind, file and use spacers to get the banjo and tail to go past the joint. Took about 2 hours to custom fit the thing.

>Here are two photos . One of the lathe bed and the other of the extension. The difference on thickness of the bed rails is obvious.
