Segmented Salad Set

Rob Ceraso

>Well, I've been hanging around WC for a few months and thought maybe it was safe to post some of my work.

So here's a set of segmented salad bowls I just completed. They are made from sapelle, paduak and maple and they are finished in walnut oil.

The large one is about 11" x 5" and the small ones are each about 5.5" x 2.5".

Critiques are welcome on both the bowls and the photography. Thanks.

>Rob, the set looks very nice, and the shape is great for salad bowls. Making matched segmented pieces is quite an accomplishment !! I like it a lot.

What kind of glue and finish did you use?

The photo looks fine, except for the wrinkled background. I got some white gift wrapping paper from a discount store for a couple bucks. Works well for me.

>I like your bowls, good work. I think the wrinkles detract from the nice bowls. I bought some fleece from a fabric store and this will get rid of the wrinkles and it is not expensive in the small amounts used for pics. There are lots of colors to choose from.

>I may be strange but I like the background as is. To me a very smooth surface can make things look like they are floating unless you are very good creating just right shadows. I am no photographer, just my opinion.

Good turning and be safe

>from my angle on things I think the bowls appear to have square transition from the side to the bottom and it makes them look heavy. (They are also more stable) The bottom looks to be 75-100% of the diameter. They would look better (IMHO) if the sides sloped more and the bottom was about 50% of the diameter. I think at 50% they are still stable enough for use.

Now you would have to see how this changing outside shape would affect the appearance of your feature ring and this is hard for me to see in the pic. If you have to turn away the feature ring or if it would change the shapes of the segments in the feature ring then it may not be possible to make the foot of your bowl smaller without goofing up your design.

Hope all this rambling helps.

>Hi Fred,

Thank you for the comments. The glue is Titebond III and the finish is Mahoney's Walnut Oil.

>Hi Greg,

Yes the bowls do have a heaviness to them but that's kinda the look I was going for - maybe I went too heavy though. The transition from side to bottom is at a slight angle - maybe 10 degrees (or is that 80 degrees?). The foot probably could stand to be a little smaller.

Thanks for your input.

But, are they dishwasher save?

Paul Porter in Phoenix, AZ

>Just had to ask. Beautiful bowls by the way. Almost to purdy to eat from.

A few years ago, we gave a real nice laminated cutting board to a friend of ours. She called one day saying the board just fell apart. I asked how she cleaned it and she said she washed it in the dishwasher! ARRRG! I wasn't cheap either.

>appreciate this piece has taken a lot of work. the glue lines in the light wood on the detail ring stand out. maybe they could be offset or aligned with the thinner inserts?
