Bowl Blanks

Barry Irby

>I have cut some cherry and walnut for lumber. There are lots of off cuts and pieces that are too small for that use but that would make good bowl blanks. Is there a market for them? If I were to cut blanks and anchorseal them is anyone interested? I have no idea what they are worth or how much the shipping would be. Should I prep a few and offer them on the Classified side? I'm in Virginia. I hate to see this wood go to waste, but I don't want to go prep a thousand blanks only to find they don't sell. Does anyone buy such blanks? How Many? At what price? TIA

I sure would like to have some cherry blanks. How thick are they? I am on the Easter Shore of VA.

>I have a lot of logs that I have sawed into bowl blanks. I have many different kinds of wood, cherry, maple, walnut, elm, popular, and more. I have looked on ebay to see if I could sell it there. I found that others are doing a business selling bowl blanks there. I haven't tried it but intend to do so. Go to www.ebay.com and use their search engine by putting in bowl blanks, or wood turning. This will give you a feel for the market.

>There is a market, but it behooves you to make sure that the wood is dry and stabilized before selling them. If you ship a blank that cracks during shipping or after arrival, you may be obligated to replace it. Also, dry wood will cost less to ship.

Get some flat rate Priority Mail boxes. *LINK*

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Barry,

I sell some wood from time to time and I wouldn't expect to get rich doing it. If you figure out how much firewood goes for in your area then calculate the time you spend processing the wood beyond firewood stage you will find that there isn't much profit margin. Also consider that people think you got it for free so you should basically should give it away.

That said if you want to try selling wood get some flat rate boxes from USPS($7.70 up to 70#) and cut blanks to fit the box FRB1. That will make a blank about 8" wide, 10.5" long and 5" thick. I like to cut green wood about 2" longer than wide to allow for possible cracking in the end grain so these boxes are made to order. You can order 25 boxes from USPS on line and they will deliver them free to your door. Buyers like to know they will not be paying more for shipping than they do for the wood.

I smell bacon frying, I wonder who she is and what she did with my wife in Longview, WA.

>Barry, I have bought wood from ebay and other sources in the past, and you will see from an earlier thread I posted (All roads lead to Rockler) that I asked for a source recently. One of the key things for a buyer, as someone else mentioned is shipping cost, so, only ship them dry.

>Carol, I have not cut the blanks yet. I have pieces I can cut into blanks that will make 10.5 by about 5 bowls. I may have a few that are larger. I will have dozens that are smaller. What size are you interested in?

Don't you know Dick Hines? We are in the Richmond Area Wood turning Club.

Don't you have a shiny new chainsaw? Are you interested in coming and cutting some blanks? The wood is down near Blackstone off Highway 40. Might be a fairly long ride for you, though. Tell me what you want and what you want to do. I am also thinking of harvesting a hackberry and some other trees while I'm at it. We may just browse.

>Fred and everyone else. The tree is in Blackstone, VA. One block off Main on tenth street. Take your Chain saw and go get all you want. Tell them I said it was OK. There will be people there to assist you.

April Fools, That's the Police Department. They will assist you into cell if you cut their tree and they don't know me from Adam.

Couldn't help it.

The wood really is near Blackstone on my family farm. I see you are in NC. Near Raleigh? My son is in school at State for a few more weeks. I tried to sign him up in the Triangle Wood turners for a while, but something (girls)distracted him. Might be able to get him to make a delivery though.

>Thanks to everyone, this is a great forum. Thanks to Dave for the suggestion of the boxes. I will cut the blanks to fit them if I get going on this. Great Idea.

>Yep, I know Dick. His brother came over a week or so ago and gave me some training on how to use my chainsaw. Keep trying to get over to Dick's shop, but that trafic fiasco on I-64 has me spooked! LOL

I only have a mini so I can't use blanks any larger than about 9.5". Blackstone is a "fur piece" for me to drive though! How many blanks can you stuff into one of those flat rate boxes? Are they dry or green?
