>I have just acquired a rather large piece of birch with a burl attached. I read someplace that the burl actually extends into the trunk of the tree. If that is the case then is there a better way to deal with the burl rather than just slicing it off the trunk?
>Split the trunk portion through the pith, Debbie. That way you will save the flares of the eyes, as they go all the way to the pith. Burls are just a buildup of dormant buds, and each bud has a "root" that begins at the pith and goes outward toward the bark. Some of the most spectacular figure is contained in the portion a lot of people leave in the trunk by slicing the burl cap off.
