>These are turkey calls known as trumpet yelpers. They are made from mesquite with Texas ebony inserts with ivory mouthpieces and a brass ferrule.

Question: Which one is more appealing to the eye. The only difference between the two is that the brass ferrule on the one on the right is 1/8" shorter and thus the trumpet body is 1/8" longer. Both calls are 9" long. The shorter ferrule is a design modification I made recently.

thanks for looking and commenting.

>I like the shape of the left one more, but I think the single row of inserts on the right one look better and are positioned to be more pleasing to the eye. The row of inserts on the left one, in the middle, don't look right to me for some reason.

>I have never used a turkey call in my life but my wife has. Several times a day. Usualy when she calls me for meals.

I think the one on the left looks more elegant. The black dots in the middel and the longer furrel gives it more caractor.

Turning is fun.

>Asthetically, it is my opinion that the longer wood and shorter ferrule on the call on the right looks best...in this photo.

It is not possible to have an opinion as to whether or not it works best.

>Like them both but which one sounds better? That's the real question.

Is that real ivory or a substition?

>Hi Danny, the differences seem to be minute, however, the shorter ferrule seems to be a better fit. I think a plain piece of wood would benefit from the extra decoration of the contrasting wood inserts, while a piece of rosewood, for example may look better without any decoration at all. These are skillfully executed pieces!

>It is real elephant ivory, pre-ban. It holds detail wonderfully, but boy is it hard, and it will tear out if you try to make too heavy of a cut, so it slow working. But when it's finished, it polishes up beautifully.

>I have one with the shorter ferrule and two rows of inserts that I hope to finish tomorrow night. Maybe by looking at two with two rows of inserts, the difference in the length of the ferrule and the wood will be more noticed in the photo.

Also the photo is taken from a slight angle from above. Of the two photos I took looking straight on, one was slightly out of focus and the other had a lot of glare on the bells.

It's amazing looking at them in person, the one with the shorter ferrule and longer wood actually looks taller. However, overall length is the same on both of them. My wife, who has an excellent eye for proportion, and I both thought the one with the shorter ferrule and longer wood looked more "graceful". Interesting that there are more votes for the one on the left.

I agree about how different woods would benefit or not benefit. I posted a pic back in November of one I made from Black Acacia with some fiddleback figure. It definitely would not have benefited from the inserts. I'm anxious to make some out of different combinations of wood, but these have been very popular, and I have a couple more orders in the wings.
