Newbie question re hot glue guns

GaryG in MD

>Based on experiences I've read in forums, I've decided to use hot glue rather than CA for attaching waste blocks (to bowls, etc., in the 6" -11" range. I've never used hot glue before so I've got to go out and buy a gun. I understand that they come in many sizes and powers. What size, type, features, etc. should I look for? Thanks for your comments. ...GaryG

>For hot glue I would spend $5 or so at the Goodwill or Salvation Army for an electric skillet. Melt the glue and dip the waste block. Just unplug and let harden until you need it again.

>Stuart,

What an interesting idea! I would never have thought of that. Sounds like experience to me ... that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a lot.

>I have a 160W and a 40W gun. I only use the 160W gun for lathe stuff. I have also even pre-heated large pieces slightly with a heat gun before applying the glue. You don't want it to start to harden before you mate the pieces.

The frying pan is a good idea but it uses too much space for me.

I would say for a gun bigger is better within your budget.

There are several types of glue also. One type specific for wood. I get it at Michaels and the wood sticks are yellow sted of white.

Yup....learned that from Ken Bullock's video

>Works great. Good coverage and holding power (as far as hot melt glue goes). A pot of glue lasts a LONG time and warm up time isn't that long.

>I use a 40 watt gun that I picked up new for $2.95 at the local Superstore. That is a grocery store chain with a small hardware section. Let it it get hot before you use it. It sounds obvious but small guns need at least ten minutes before use. Almost any glue works. I have used this for years on bowls up to 18 inches with no problems.
