>Has anyone here used the WoodCraft "Pinnacle" gouges and scrapers? They are HSS out of China. I am thinking of buying some to practice grinding my own unigue shapes, was wondering if they are any good at all?
I have found the Pinnacle tools to be the equal of any of the Sheffield tools. There aren't many styles and they are selling out in some of the larger sizes.
The China made tools that Penn State is selling, as Benjamin's Best, are also the equal of the Sheffield tools. There are a few more styles listed but they are selling out more quickly and most of the Penn State tools are backordered.
The China made sets from HF are also good tools, though mostly small scrapers and small gouges.
I think we are going to see a LOT more tools and styles from China. I worry that these tools are going to impact the Sheffield tool makers to the point that we may not have Sorby and Henry Taylor tools in another 5 years.
Please note that Woodcraft is selling their China made tools for a lot more than Penn State or HF. On the plus side, Woodcraft has a one year guaranty on everything they sell. If within the first year of purchase you want to return a Pinnacle tool, for any reason, you can do so for a refund.
>While I myself haven't tried them yet, I did inspect them closely. If you are going to buy one (or more) get them individually....*NOT* in the set.
Why?
Compare a bowl gouge from the single pack to the one in the bozed set. There is 30% LESS flute in the boxed set version. It almost like they ground down the tool to fit in the box! Same goes for the spindle gouge, but to a somewhat lesser extent.
>I bought the parting tool a while back, and it performs well for me. I'm not sorry I bought it.From what I see, they are Sheffield steel.I would try one for the money, and if you don't like it return it.I also agree, don't buy a whole set.
