Ebay wood

>Being involved full time in another Trade, I don't have much time or access to free wood. My tree trimming guy isn't too responsive to my pleas.

But I've been buying wood off Ebay for several years. I have really only had two bad experiences and neither of them were deliberate misrepresentations or anything like that.

In one case, the problem was simply that wood shipped in from a moister climate doesn't always acclimate right away in the high desert. I lost some osage orange that cracked badly within a day of arriving at my shop. I have to tell you that I was badly depressed. But the seller not only replaced the wood...and then some...he allowed me to keep what I could salvage from the original piece.

The other case was similar enough to not repeat the whole sad tale but just to say that the seller not only replaced the wood...doubling the original order of mesqiute...he also sent several identically sized pieces (18"x2"x2") each of bocote, paduak, and ironwood.

I've been bidding on and ordering some bowl blanks recently and haven't gotten a bad piece yet. If anything they are better than I would expect. The only real problem is that sometimes the shipping on green blanks is nearly as expensive as the wood.

Anyway...for what it's worth...

I have sold some wood on ebay.

>It is a pain to sell wood on ebay. Shipping weight turns a lot of people off. I started selling wood on my website and it is a lot less hassle. And hand people know where to find me if there is a problem with any order.

Caveat emptor.

>I think that I have struck the perfect balance of "cost vs. value". Someone posted an announcement here that changed everything with regards to the costs of shipping wood: USPS flat rate boxes.

There are two sizes: roughly and 8" cube and a 12x12x5" box, that regardless of weight, costs $7.70 to ship to anyone, anywhere in the Continental US. So for $7.70, you can get wood sent from someone if it fits in the box. Problem one solved.

Problem 2: Where do you get wood? Where I live, the stuff grows on trees. What is "just a cherry tree" to me is the prettiest wood in the world to someone from the southwest. Not sure what the high desert has to offer, but someone, somewhere will want it. Trading for a box of wood just got easier... even if your trade isn't wood (something in Oregon must be trade-able?)

Offer me a trade, and I'll send you $7.70 box of Northeast exotics.

>Dave,

You didn't mention your website...??!

I think the real problem with Ebay wood is that once you buy it, it's no longer "just wood." It's an investment. Hard to make a mistake and toss it into the woodpile. Maybe that's the way it should be, I don't know.

But for some people, buying wood seems almost like the only way to accumulate enough "rough turned" bowls to keep you busy.

Actual flat rate shipping box sizes.

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>BOX SIZES - inside dimensions

*FRB1 - 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 11"

*FRB2 - 3 3/8" x 11 7/8" x 13 5/8"

USPS will deliver 25 flat rate Priority Mail boxes to your door free of charge. An other reduction to my shipping cost. Individual boxes are available at the Post Office. You need to ship at least 5 pounds to make the flat rate box cost effective. Usually not a problem with wood. I shipped a 12 pound box yesterday for $7.70 that will be in Illinois on Wednesday.

Enough lignum vitae to fill a flat rate box would be shipped by armored car.

>I've sold quite a bit of turning lumber on ebay. Has always been a positive experience for me. I have also bought a bit, before I established my own sources locally.

Whenever I wind up with too much stock (frequently) I'll sell off just enough so I won't worry about it all cracking before I get to it. I also sell off an amount equal to the shipping cost of every pallet full of maple burl I have shipped from Oregon. Barely makes a dent in my stash and makes me feel better.

I always think it is funny when someone from California buys maple burl from me that I had shipped in from Oregon. All I did to it was cut it up and waxed it! Would have bee way cheaper for them to go right to Oregon.

I'd like to sell it off locally but I get WAY higher prices on ebay. I usually ship by wrapping the pieces in plastic, and stuffing them in a bag full of fresh shavings, then put it inside a shipping box. Nobody has emailed me with reports of cracking as of yet.
