for cutting endgrain. They sharpen with the use of a router and it sounds ominous. I'd like to know if the router is used in a table and if it's difficult to sharpen before I buy one. Advice will be greatly appreciated
1) Mount supplied stone in router and invert so that stone faces up.
2) Mount termite tool into sharpening jig so that the setscrew engages flat on tool shank, being sure that the flat edge of tool is parallel to the flat surface of the holder.
3) With the router OFF, place the holder onto the router base so that the stone is in the center of the tool, and slightly below it. At this time, the sharpening stone should not touch the tool.
4) Practice moving the jig in a motion that causes the tool to make a circular path around the stone so that the tool will be ground completely around on the inside only. When confident, turn on router and sharpen tool.Do not stop the movement around the stone, as to do so would create a non round, or scalloped surface and burn the tool.
5) Flip holder over and sharpen the other side.
Caveats on this tool
1) It must be used with the tool about 30 deg. from the vertical,NEVER HORIZONTAL, OR FLAT. This would cause an immediate huge catch and break the tool.
2) The tool has 2 cuting sides, one smaller than the other which facilitates a different angle of attack, or handle position.
3) Careful resharpening with the jig (inside only) will give a reasonably long tool life
>Doug gave good directions, but just to add - it turns out to be very easy and very quick. No easy way to get hurt and you don't need a router table. If you don't have a router, a friend or local woodcraft store should gladly help.
I have a termite with three different sizes of cutters and I love it for certain cuts, such as little boxes. If you get a Termite, be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
This guy wrote an informative article you might find useful:
>Ken- the Termite can also be sharpened easily with a Dremel type tool to drive the stone for sharpening- the router can be a little too aggressive and noisy for me!
I bought one of the white grindstones from Dremel and mounted it in my drill press. Then I made a wooded holder to hold the termite. I lower the drill press with stone into the termite and just move the wooden holder around to sharpen the bit.
