Maple Bowl

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi,

I have been having some success recently with the quality of my pen photography, I decided to try it on a turning.

I turned this curly maple bowl a few years ago, I was looking for a clean shape that allowed the figure of the wood to be the feature.

This bowl is about 10 inches across and stands nearly 4 1/2 inches tall. The finish is a danish oil, followed by a series of Beall wheel buffings.

Thanks for viewing,

take care,

Jim

The bowl looks great and so does the wood. I would move the left light up a little it's a little bit too strong on the bottom left side. Possible move the light up and further away. That may improve the over all lighting. Although moving the light away will require a longer exposure the fall off or difference between the light on the left and the amount of light on the right will be less so the lighting will be a little more even.

>Thanks John,

Yes, I agree, I had it in too close, I tried to work the exposure compensation, but the edge on the left was too hot. I appreciate your words of advice.

Take care,

Jim

>Jim,

It is too bad that you stuck with the swirly wood up there in Canada. Why don't you send it on down to me and I will send you some nice straight grained Red Oak? Sounds fair to me.

Seriously, Very nice Jim. Good form, good wood selection, good finish. 3 for 3. I am undecided about the lip turning back into the middle, rather than continuing the curve - but as alway, hard to tell from a photo.

>Hi Jennifer,

Thank you.

When I was turning this bowl I was remembering what you once told me about a contious shape through the base, I really tried that on this one..

:-)

Take care,

Jim

>Hi Jim,

Great photograph! I actually remember when you posted this bowl the first time as I have a copy of that picture in my "keepers" folder! The grain and shape work so wonderfully together on this one. I'll add this one as an update to your earlier picture :)

The photography really is very well done. Isn't it funny the skills you pick up to turn a bowl!!

Thanks for the pic,

Mike

>Hi Mike,

Should I be worried??

:-)

Thanks, making the turning is a great deal of fun, but to communicate the image, welll now there is a lesson in that alone!!!

I have to say that I have learnt a great deal here and in emails with a few people to help me with my work.

Jennifer should take a big bow for the "look" of my pictures, she has been very patient explaining in email to me how to improve my images.

take care,

Jim

>You might consider rotating your background material so that the "grain" runs side to side instead of front to back. Nice bowl and photo.
