Classifieds do work! - Gloat

>Found my new lathe right here in the WC classifieds, and picked it up this morning, only 220 miles from home. I had been wanting a heavier lathe, and this baby weights in at about 700 pounds. It is a Powermatic 90 and was buit around 1960. Baldor 1-1/2 HP 220 motor. It has an outboard faceplace and several other attachments including adaptor for 1"-8 TPI. Pic below shows the lathe as we dismantled it to load aboard the pickup. The cap is my travel companion.

My daughter lives in Charlotte and we get up there from time to time. I've had coffee with Wayne Cooper a couple of times there, too.

>Yes they do. I'm glad you got yourself a work horse.

I found my Bonnie [Bonnie Klein lathe] in the WC classifieds. A fine guy named Bob S. had a lonely Bonnie on a shelf and I had an empty workbench just for her, a perfect match.

>Good for you. Good heavy iron is hard to find now days. Strongly suggest you figure out a cover for that belt. GT

>The cover had just been taken off. We were in the process of dismantling the lathe to load it on a pickup, so the cover did not show up in the pic.

I had a quick demo of the lathe, and the previous owner rouged up a piece. I was amazed how much wood he was cutting in one pass, with no vibration at all. That lathe is solid, and the 1-1/2 HP Baldor motor does it justice.

Thanks for your concern, George. Without the cover that pulley and belt would be scary!

>Hummm...

That picture brings back a few memories! I turned on that same style of lathe in junior high school in woodshop class. We had three lathes in a class of about 30 kids, so you had to know Karate to get on one of the lathes...

Congradulations to you on getting a bigger, heavier lathe. Down here in Texas, we like things BIG and HEAVY. :-) Best wishes to you in all of your woodturning endeavours! If I can assist you, please do not hesitate to contact me. Take care.
