>A regular spindle gouge (3/8") with a fingernail grind works for me. If you are doing large pieces, you may want a large spindle gouge. My $0.02. Others probably have other opinions.

>I am very pleased with OneWay's Termite end grain tool. Not a gouge in the truest sense, but much better. Cuts end grain like butter.

>I'll second the bowl gouge. I have a termite tool and a hook tool and I do like them for certain tasks but I can sharpen the bowl gouge quicker and easier and don't find it any slower for turning or hollowing endgrain.

>If you're hollowing the inside of a lidded box, the Berger tool works well especially if you predrill to depth--the drill size doesn't have to be more than 1/4 inch.
If you're turning exterior end grain, as in finishing the foot of a box, a skewchigouge works great.
