David Marks redwood sphere

>I was in David Marks shop last week doing a 1 on 1 for a few days. David is working on a project that incorporates this huge redwood sphere. It weighed ~400lbs before he turned and hollowed. Now weighs about ~40 lbs. He boiled it and then gave it an alcohol bath to reduce the moisture content to an acceptable level for finishing.

>Minimax 36"... it is a beast. David is very happy with it. He has 4 bandsaws in his shop a 14" and 20" Delta and a Minimax 20" to go with the 36".

>Ahem...the point is not Davids sphere (though it IS cool), but the fact that you spent a couple of days in one-on-one with him! So what did you do/learn? Come on now - that's a gloat and you need to share! :)

>Oh yeah right....did not do any turning stuff...maybe another time. Actually spent time with him learning how to layout and cut dovetails :) What a blast. David is really a great guy and of course a fantastic woodworker/artist. We took a couple of pieces of wood (walnut and Curly maple) from his huge stockpile and proceeded to joint, plane, drumsand and cut to final dimension before laying out and chopping the dovetails. David's real passion is sculptures, turning, and his finishing techniques. What a treat to spend 2 days with him!!!!

>He looks like he's standing ready to try to catch it if you drop it!! He showed us pictures of him working on hollowing it a few weeks ago and said he was really excited about it. It's going into an outdoor sculpture.
