Small Gloat - Raises a Question

Raymond Overman in SC

>I ordered a P&N 1/2" bowl gouge and an Ellsworth jig for sharpening it last week and it finally came in today. (That was the gloat part, now for the question)

The paperwork that came with the jig says that it needs to be 7" from where the base of the jig sits to the front edge of the grinding wheel. If I have a 6" grinder rather than the 8" does that mean I need to change the measurement to the front edge to 6" since I've got 1" less radius on the wheel?

I hope that would give the correct geometry since the settings from the paperwork doesn't allow the gouge to touch the wheel. It's going to be a heck of a time getting the grind right without it reaching. (So far, It seems to be working at 6")

>In general, no you do not need to change the 7" measurement. I will not effect the shape of the grind, other than the fact that the Hollow grind on the face of the gouge will be a little more concave than it would if you had a larger diameter grinding wheel.

>If I remember the geometry of the whole thing, you work off the center point of the face (contact point) of the wheel so when you set it up it doesn't matter 6 8 or 10 inch wheel. If you grind down your wheel some it will change the geometry a little and change the grind with it. You should like the P&N gouge, I have lots of their stuff and it cuts well and holds an edge very well. MP Wall

>Raymond. I have used the Ellsworth Jig from before it became available on the market and his instructions is, 7" from the face in a horiziontal plane, and the base of the pivot must be 4" from the CENTER of the wheel, or spindle, in a vertical direction. I would guess that you must have over 4" in the vertical if the tool won't reach the wheel at the 7" horizontal setting. Also, how far is the tool protruding from the front of the jig? Remember, when done grinding, you want the bevel of the tool to be about 65 deg.

I just love that grind.
