Tool Roll?

Carole in VA

>What do you guys use to transport your turning tools? The lady from Woodcraft called and told me to bring my turning tools tomorrow and I didn't want them loose in the car. For now I have them stuffed into pieces of that black foam pipe insulation and then put in a duffle bag. Not very elegant, but serviceable for the moment. Do they make rolls that will protct and transport a full set of turning chisels?

Make your own

John Trant (Baltimore/DC area)

>I made my own out of some type of heavy material the fabic store recommended. I simply folded the ends of a length of material towards the center (about 1/4 the total length), sewed long pockets on both ends, left a flap on one edge, and sewed a length of string on the back to tie it all up. If a ham-handed guy like me can do it, I am sure everyone else in the world can do it far better. NB: Make one roll for small to medium length tools and another of long tools.

>Woodcraft carries a tool roll for woodturning tools. It's somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-35 bucks.

>The Woodcraft tool roll as has already been recommened is quite handy. In the mean time, stick come styrofoam into the bottom of a 5 gal. bucket and put your tools in there, tip down. By the time you add a chuck, faceplate and other accessories it won't be tippy.

>Hi Carole,

When I first started turning I bought a Woodcraft Tool roll for carrying my tools....I didn't use it for a while and then I was headed to Bill Grumbine's for a weekend of turning....I was thrilled to be able to use my new tool roll. So I get it out of the package and unfold it and get all the tools that I think I'll want to take with me. The mighty skew was first....although I hated that tool and had never really used it as a skew, only a scraper. So into the new tool roll it went....and rrrrrip! Dumb me puts it in point first! Oh, well so much for a nice new tool roll. I don't think I've used it since.....I carry mine in a 5 gal bucket now.

I bought a behind the seat truck tool box from Sears. It's perfect for most tools that aren't too long. I'll have to measure it but it's something like 18" long 6 or 7 wide and deep enough to hold 2 layers of tools or a small chuck like the talon or vM120. It's plastic and takes a beating. I have 2 and usually I can put all the tools and wood I need for demo's except for bowl blanks.

>I found a plastic tool box at Lowes. It's 26" long. So even my newest gouges will fit.The tough plastic won't damage tool edge and the top tray holds all the small stuff. With a lockable lid. But if I had it to do over I would get one on wheels and a handle to pul it with. Plastic buckets become to top heavy and tip over easly, and the small stuff stored in the bottom is to hard to get to.

Turning is "FUN"

>Woodcraft, Packard, and Craft Supplies all carry tool rolls. I have two of the Craft Supplies rolls and use them all the time. I also have a Duluth Trading Company Long tool bag in which I carry accessories. I have a denim pouch and small tool roll from that I got from Treeline. I use these for small hollowing tools, centers, sharpening stones, pencils, etc. I usually put these in the long bag.

I have a 5 gallon bucket at home, but I find the tool rolls and long tool bag much easier to carry and transport.

Gun case

Dave Peebles Lyons, Ohio!

>Hi Carole,

I do travel a little for demos and was always looking for a better way to carry my tools. A few years ago I was in my local discount super store. And I happened into the sporting goods section. I saw the perfect solution for me. It was a composite, or maybe plastic gun case with a foam interior. It is about 4'long by 12" high and will hold all my turning tools very safely. It was about $20.00

But I may have trouble boarding a commercial airline flight with it. :)

Best wishes,

Dave

Durn it!

Rod Peterson -- Ormond Beach

>Seeing your gun case at Jennifer's forced me to go get one of my own, and I'm glad I did. It was less than $25 as I recall. We had one of those mega outdoors stores near us in South Florida, which is where I got mine.

One of the things I've been meaning to do is put in some sort of supplemental foam or dividers. Between the egg-crate foam halves not gripping as strongly as I'd like, and the flexibility of the plastic case sides not providing as stiff a background on which the foam can press, the tools wind up moving around a bit.

And yes, Dave, I guarantee you won't board with that. You'll have to check it. And I'd be willing to bet large amounts they'd want to go through it.

Rod

P.S. Seems to me I recall posting a picture of it once. I'll have to check my server and see if it's still there, if anyone is interested in seeing it.

>I keep a seperate roll of tools and bag for the classes I give. I also use the Woodcraft /Craft Supply type roll. First thing I did, too, was cut a gash with my 1" skew. I duct taped it from th einside and ket using it. But I did wonder why my tools kept falling out. Duh...gee george.... I pt them blade in first which stupid me thought was the safest. It turns out the handle goes in first. No cutting of fabric and all of a sudden it rolls up real nice and the tools don't slide out, duh!

>Hi Rod,

Hope all is well in your new digs.

I also thought I had a pic of it from the "End of the Pond party" But it can't be found on this machine:) Gotta look through my floppy discs from the old camera.
