Museum Adhesive?

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Do any of you use any sort of adhesive to secure your pieces when being displayed on pedestals? I'm looking for a product that is referred to as museum glue, or museum adhesive? The only thing that I've found is for use on non porous materials and not recommended for wood. I don't want it to stain the bottom of my bowls...and I don't want to use something like double sided tape, which might look yucky. My pedestals will be in the middle of the room in an upcoming show and I'm concerned about them getting bumped and a piece toppling to the floor. Any suggestions or sources would be fantastic.

Thank you!

Jennifer

>Jennifer, the stuff I have seen is a kind of putty. I have seen it in the knick nack stores that would sell things like wax to stop tall candles toppling, or gizmo's for polishing silver. Also a quakeshake product, again like a putty, to stop art peices moving in an earthquake/ I am wondering if the putty one uses for hanging posters would work?

If you want there are a couple of stores I can go and check tomorrow.

Its called Museum Wax

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Jennifer,

The container I have says: Crystalline Clear Museum Wax For Anchoring Collectibles & Artifacts

The manufacturer is Trevco, Monrovia, CA.

I think I bought it at the local ACE Hardware store. I don't think there will be any problem with the wax adhering to finished pieces. It is removable.

Now if I only had a pedestal in a show to anchor some turnings.

I'm sure this isn't museum quality but I bought the stuff used to hang posters. It's a putty and is reusable. I put my work on display in a building right next to a railway and it also was on pedestals in a crowded walkway. It worked great and was easily removeable.

>Hi Jennifer

I have seen three products:

Clear Museum Gel

Museum Putty

Crystalline Clear Museum Wax

Those are all links to Aftosa. I am sure many other places sell the same things.

If the pieces are going to be picked up and looked at more than a couple of times a day then these products will likely be a pain to use. If you want the pieces to be secure from the ocasional bump to a pedistal these products can give you that.

Good Luck

Richard

Re: Making a display

>I've recently been asked to display a couple things at an upcoming local arts group show. I have to make a stand so I decided to build a 3 legged stand using the outside of the log with the bark that the wood for the bowl came from. The bark side will be the bottom and the flat chainsawed side will be sanded and a quick finish put on it to be the surface the bowl will sit on.

I also just made a bottle stopper display using a 3/4 inch section of the log some of the stoppers came from.

I think this lets people see the start and finish of the product.

Thanks Everybody!

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Thank you so much for your great responses. I will take this information and find what I need and place an order. I don't think it will get here by next Thursday though, which is when I need to have my work at the gallery for the show that starts on Friday. My friend Betty has some of the stuff called Museum-Wax that a gallery in California gave her and is going to let me have a hunk of it to get me through this show. Hopefully there will be more shows to use this stuff on in the future :)

Ruth, you are too kind! If I come up completely empty handed I might take you up on your offer..but for now, I think I just need to get on the phone and make some calls and place an order. Thank you so much.
