Powermatic 3520A info please

JR in south Louisiana

>Well, I have finally convince myself to take the plunge and puchase the lathe. Problem is I do not have 220 where I need it, so I called an electrician and the only question I couldn't answer was how many amps does it draw. I looked in the pdf manual provided on their wed site, but

it doesn't have it. He said he could run #8 and it would probably cover it. Does this sound right? Is the AMPS posted on the unit?

thanks

>If all you are going to run is one 22ov device at one time - just the lathe, a 20 amp circuit would be enough. I ran a 30 amp curcuit to my shop, and "Over wired" it because it was a long run from the circuit box to the shop. And I did not want to wish later that I had more wire in the ground.

>I'm no electrician, but #8 should be fine for a normal distance run. I ran 10/4 throughout my basement to a 30amp breaker. That same circuit runs my 5hp cabinet saw and my 2hp PM3520a (both billed as 30amp devices) - but since I can't run them at the same time it causes me no problems.

Still - I called Powermatic and they told me a 20amp circuit would be fine, I doubt that motor draws anything near 20amps in reality. BUT I'm no electrician.

>I believe the motor tag reads 6 amps, which when doubled for start up gives you 12 amps draw. So a 15 amp circuit would do in a pinch, but I have 20's for my 220 plugs and for that matter most of my 110's excepts some that get bigger. 8 ga is a bit overkill unless the run is long, most will use 10 ga for a 20 amp 220 setup.

>Most people don't even use #8 for dirers. You don't need #8. I pulled in some #10 2 with ground and if I don't need it I will never use it again. I ran one line for my PM and one for my dust collerter. Worse stuff I have ever worked with.

I have a 100 amp line to my shop and the electrician used #6 and I have never had any trouble.

>You should be fine with 12guage 20 Amp wire, its what I have on mine and the run is ~40-50 feet. The motor has a soft start so its not goign to pull huge amos even at startup. I branched off my table saw since I wont ever use both the lathe and the table saw at the same time. I did run a dedicatd circuit to the 2HP DC though as that is always on when another machine is on. Good Luck

Chris
