>John's post of his small vessel of rhododendron root reminded me of this bowl I turned. It's Apple. Half of it is root wood and the other half regular wood. It came from a stump where the two type of wood joined. I turned it green as you cam see it warped a lot. It's 3 1/2" H by 6 1/4" D.
>There was a lot going on with this wood. The root side was much softer. The regular wood was a lot more dense. It's finished with Mike Mahoney Walnut Oil. The root side really sucked the oil up! There is also some burl figure in the regular wood. It really was round and the rim flat before it dried.
Its fun to see how these things will move -- and Apple does move !
Looks like the root part was getting a little punky and spalted -- Apples here are often hollow as they seem to rot from the inside out. I suspect a lot of that comes from branches being pruned and/or broken off, and the wood dying back down into the trunk & roots.
I have some apple with quite a bit of reaction wood in it, due to the lean of the trunk, and want to try a few thin bowls and hollow forms to see if I can get any real odd shapes from shrinkage. Your post reminds me I need to get to it !
