>As mentioned, here's a bowl I did from eastern red cedar, 7" diameter. To deal with grain tearout, I used cabinet scrapers followed by 400 grit sandpaper. Finished with beeswax only.
I love the feel of the soft curves and the satin finish. I may try this again.
No tool rest. Just sharpen the scraper, burnish an edge, then hold it tilted down at slow speed with the toolrest removed. Very light touch. There is no way you can make it catch or get hurt, no matter how hard you push. Often I keep the scraper horizontal, but sometimes angled quite a bit, especially to match up with a curve on the piece.
I usually keep the scraper moving so no part of the edge stays in one spot. I mostly use a curved scraper (french curve shape?) but sometime rectangular, and sometimes little bits of improvised scrapers. I'm thinking of grinding some better shapes for the inside of lips, etc.
(I was repremanded for saying this once, but I also have found it useful to use regular scrapers this way with no tool rest - but aimed down and NEVER on the inside of a bowl)
I do this very often too. I find it give a very nice smooth cut with my shear scrapers and no tool rest support. Hey... what ever works is always good. :)
