dust control advice

>I plan to buy an air filtration box to hang above my new lathe. The Jet model seems fairly priced and the

delta is a bit less costly. Opinions please.

Also I need to set my dust collector to pick up, hopefully, most of the dust and chips. I've seen photos of a stand holding a pan to place behind the lathe but don't know who sells it. Help with this too please.

Thanks

I'll give you two options for the dust collector part first. Rockler sells a "Universal Dust Collection Port" - see link below. I have seen it in action and it works well - provided you have enough CFM to handle it. It won't get your chips that well, but will get rid of the dust nicely. Woodcraft sells a "Floor Stand Suction Head" as well as a "Lathe Dust Hood". I have the Floor Stand Suction Head, it collects dust quite nicely and I have the option of moving it to my bench to collect sanding dust. It is sitting in the back of my lathe in the picture below. The "Lathe Dust Hood" is mounted on the lathe and the one I tried was more trouble than it was worth.

As for the air filtration - both the Jet and Delta are good products. Whichever you can get on sale.

JDS Air Filter

John, Ohio

>I just ordered the JDS 750JER Air Cleaner with Remote includes Electrostatic Pre-Filter"

from Amazon for $289.99 minus $25.00 total $264.99 free shipping no tax. I have read several reviews and the JDS seems to be the best built and durable. SWMBO "asked" me to get a filtration unit after talking to a fellow woodworker. Got to love it!

>Thanks for this great reply. I'm not clear which product is in the photo. The Rockler or the one from

Woodcraft? I've seen the one in Woodcraft and questioned if it had a large enough opening to catch

much of the larger shavings. Thanks again. This is a great board.

>Ken,

A couple pieces of advice and my comments.

1) If you set up a whole shop type air filter (Jet, LDS, Delta etc), Set it up so that your normal working position is not between the dust source and the Air Cleaner. Because, you will pulling dust right past your own air intake ports (nose and mouth).

2) Don't expect to pick up too much of the chips with a DC. There is just too much momentum for the air flow to over power it and pull it into the hose. Exception being if you are working on something small that can be very very close to the air intake. However, the DC will do a good job of pulling the dust from sanding at the lathe if you can get the intake within about 10" of the sanding source. Make sure that you have the dust port in the right spot. For example, if you are sanding at the 7 to 9 o'clock on a bowl, put the collection some where from 3-6 o'clock on the bowl. Centrifical force throws the dust in that direction. If you were to put the collection at 12 o'clock, you would be missing most of the dust.

>Mark:

Fantastic! I had planned the box just over the lathe. Thanks for the advice. Now I'll lace it behind so the dust will be carried away from my nose as you point out. I'm new at this and just purchased a 20" Powermatic. I just can't wail till that baby shows up at my door. I can't figure out which air cleaner is the best choice but I'mm leaning toward the Delta. All these decisions are wearing me out.

Grateful for the help I get from this board.

Thanks much

>Ken- I have used all 3 while working at Woodcraft and chose the JDS because it's less noisy, and I use the remote all the time.
