Sassafras Bowl

>All,
This is a small sassafras bowl, saved from the fire wood pile, about 7" by 7" by 1/4" thick. Finish is just plain old lemon oil from Menards. Critiques are very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

>While I don't personally care for the finish, I've got to tell you that I love the line and overall shape. In my opinion, that's as near to a perfect curve as I've seen. I also like the way the rim feeds into the line of the work. Very nice.

>Sam,
Isn't sassafras fun to turn! It smells so good I even enjoy digging sassafras stumps with the backhoe. (Been doing a lot of that lately!) And stable - I have a rough turned 12" plate a friend turned green about 10 years ago and I can't tell by looking if it is out of round.
I like the shape of your bowl, and the rim at the top. I personally don't care for the three rings in the middle. While the three rings work very well in the pear bowl you posted in another thread, to me they "crowd" the visual feature of the concentric circles around the pith in this bowl. (And straight lines cutting across tight concentric circles always cause a bit of optical illusion causing the straight lines to appear bent - I see a bit of that here)
The bowl does have a nice earthenware look to it. I like the finish - it's a change from the usual high gloss.

>Hi Sam.
Nice round form. Looks like it would be nice to hold.....and I like the little peek hole too!
