Hollowing Tool

Ken George

>I recently made my first hollow form(don't have a picture yet as my room is occupied by contractor stuff for a bathroom remodel) and had problems getting the bottom smooth. Used a Sorby multi-tool which couldn't reach the bottom. Better planning is called for. I am looking for suggestions/recommendations on hollowing tools for a hollowing tool with a longer reach.

Thanks,

Ken

You're half way there already...

>Get a 3/4" or 1" diameter steel rod (Home Depot, local hardware store, etc.). Grind a flat 1/2 way thru the rod about 1" long from the end. Grind the bottom part round. Drill/tap a hole in the center of the flat you just made. Use the screw, holder, and cutting bit from your Sorby tool and mount it on your flat. Turn a handle and you're in business. 3/4" rod will give you about 10" of depth (i.e. overhang from the toolrest). 1" will allow more.
