>Turned from another one of my cut offs. 4" square X 1" high. Shellac and wax finish. If you think you see poorly finished edges on either side you are right. Don't know how I missed them. They are finished properly now AFTER the photo was taken. Grrrrr.

>Nice use of cut-offs, Don. I want to try one of those square bowls (I have a ton of walnut cut-offs) but at my level, I am a little leary of those corners spinning around! LOL

Try it on scrap first. I touch the bevel of the tool on a solid wood area. Then pull it out toward the corners touching the bevel as light as possible. When you pass the end move the handle out very slightly and start your cut. As long as you make a light cut and keep the bevel rubbing it is pretty safe. You may find that you need to rotate the flute a little bit one way or the other. This keeps the tearout on the uphill grain side of the square corners to a minimum.

If you blow one of the just make the piece round. John

>You can glue on sacrificial sides, turn as a round bowl and then remove the sacrificial parts. Don't know the best way to glue them for easy cleanup after removal. Maybe the brown paper sandwich trick works.

>Don't really have any problems turning them square. Seems like the other way is just a lot of extra work. My problem here was that I just missed the poor sanding job on that one side. Thanks for the suggestion anway. Appreciate the intent to help.

>Hi Don,

I didn't think you had a problem with corners since you had done it. My response was to Carole who said she was leery of them.

I did my first square one the other day and didn't find the corners to be much of an issue although I did find that if the blank isn't mounted true on the faceplate (the mounting surface wasn't flat) then the corners come out at different thicknesses. Piece ended up more like an oval with 2 parallel sides.

Regards,

Bill
