>Need some suggestions. I'm looking for turning work but being disabled not too easy getting out to make the rounds of local shops. What I'm trying to find is some production work over the net. Came across a couple of ads at the AAW website which got me thinking along these lines. Anyone have any ideas where to look for turning work on the net? For that matter any ideas at all?
>Spence, you might also check your local Yellow Pages, under the heading "Cabinet Makers". There may be opportunities to make a few bucks by doing spindle work for them.
Also, if there is a AAW sponsored woodturners club in your area, there may be a chance of getting some grant money to help you out.
>Spence, you are in the ideal location to get lots of work from antique dealers, auctioneers, etc. Get business cards, send them to these people with a note saying you do reproduction spindle work. Better yet, take a sample of what you can do, they'll remember you.
Also contact the small general contractors (handy man) in your area for reproducing porch spindles or stair spindles or finials. Lots of people need one spindle replaced.
This is what I did when I decided I needed to do spindle work so I could support myself with lathe work and not have to go get a JOB (ugh!).
Another thing antique dealers need are an assortment of bun feet; for dressers, chests, plant stands, etc. I have one dealer who orders a dozen sets at a time in any variety of sizes and styles (my choice).
Thanks for the tip but one of my problems is not being able to get out and about too well. Main reason for trying to find work on line. I'll keep it all in mind of course, especialy the grant idea. Not too sure how that would work though but evry little bit helps.
I hear ya about having to work a real job! LOL As a matter of fact bfore I became disabled I had my own shop restoring antiques. That was how I got into turning. Once I hit the slippery slope I never looked back and turning became the main focus of the shop doing pretty much exactly what you're doing. Unfortunetly most of the folks I dealt with are no longer in business and for various reasons I can't get out too easily to hunt up the work. So my latest brain storm is to see what I can get on line. One way or the other I'm going to get back to making some money with my obsession. Thanks for the ideas. They brought back alot of happy memories. :)
