Pecan Bowl -

TomW in SouthJersey

>I just finished a pecan bowl. It is 7 inches by 2 inched high. This is the small piece from a nice chunk of wood from Bill Grumbine (thanks Bill). What great wood to work with! I have two larger pieces still drying. This was my first attempt at DNA drying and green wood turning.

It is sanded to 4000 micro mesh and finished with Shellawax liquid. Its the first time I used that finish and I like it so far. Especially on finely sanded pieces. It came out smooth as glass. I can't seem to get the depth of field quite right on this digital camera.

Comments welcome.

>Looking good Tom. I use my macro setting that helps focus better on the piece that I'm taking pictures of.

>JL - The pecan was about the easiest wood I've worked with yet. Maybe it is because its the first green wood I've turned. I don't have a moisture meter and was too lazy to weigh the bowls. They felt and appeared dry so I'm hoping I don't get any cracking or warping. I have 2 larger pieces but I like this wood so much I'm waiting a little longer to be confident they are dry.

Its also the first time I've started with a log and gone through the entire process.

>Tom, I wouldn't wait to long to urn the pecan. You said it was wet. When it dries it will be like turning a rock. It works much better turned wet.

>I don't need to worry about warping or cracking if I turn it too soon? I just finished turing some old apple that was destined for someones fireplace. That was hard wood to turn.

Here is a vase I managed to get out of it. Its 18"X4 3/4". I wanted to try captured rings after seeing a thread about the baby rattles.

>Hi Tom,

Very Nice! I love the rings on that vase. I also think the pecan bowl is good. The grain patters in it really work well for a bowl that size. The pecan bowl is about as defect free piece of pecan as I have ever seen. Thanks for the pics!

>Apple shouldn't be hard to turn even if it's dry. Maybe boring the end grain is a little tough, but all the work on the outside should have gone well. Dried apple will hold detail really well. I'm in the camp that believes in honing turning tools, especially skews and spindle gouges. I also learned the benefits of honing scrapers from an Alan Lacer demo. With sharp tools and proper technique Apple is a great wood to turn. I'm not casting stones here. I'm just trying to help. I'm learning too, and some of my work ends up as kindling.
