Live Center on 3520A

Chris K. in MD

>I had a pleasant surprise, the tail center appears to be the oneway tail-center that has the 3/4-10 threads and screw on cones. What a bonus! Anyone else have these? Is this recentchange?

This sure sounds like a GLOAT

Richard Allen

>Hi Chris

Congratulations on the new lathe!

Jet started knocking off Oneway products a couple of years ago. Oneway products now (for the past year anyway) have silk screened the Oneway logo on their products. You will notice that there is no Oneway logo on your live center.

Unscrupulous Knockoffs

Michael Stadulis, in Gloucester County, NJ

>Hi,

For the life of me I can't understand how Jet can steal Oneway's designs so incredibly blatantly. They stole the live center and faceplates and even the sme paint color. They didn't even do a thing to Oneway's product.

Outright thievery in my view, and I hear from some that the center is not at all up to par when it comes to longevity.

>Mine came with what appears to also be the Oneway center, in every way shape and form that I can see. It has seen an awful lot of use - even some from you!

I guess you'll be wanting to cut on that big cherry tree some now that you have your new toy, eh? I'm hiding a large spalted beech in the woods, too. I didn't show it to you last time you were here. 25" thick, fell over during the hurricane, been standing horitontal, about a foot off the ground ever since. It should be about perfect now.

>Your tailstock center is not a Oneway product. It just looks like one. I seem to recall Oneway having some problems with Jet/Powermatic over copyright infringement because people were mistaking Jet's tailstock center for theirs. I'm sure the PM/Jet product is a decent product, just not the real thing. Use it until it croaks, then replace it.

>Jet does it the same way all the motorcycle companies are copping the Harley V-twin motor. They change something just enough so there's is different enough so copy wright laws don't apply.

By the way I have a PM with the said live center and have used it hard for over 3 yeras with on trouble.

>I have the "real thing" and some of our club members have the Jet/Powermatic. The bearings in my "real thing" are bad and their Tiawan specials are still going with no problems. Talking to some other members that have the "real thing", they encountered the same bearing problems. The downside is it takes a special wrench to get the retaining ring off to replace the bearings. So for right now, I am using Vicmarc and Axminster.

OneWay copied the original Teknatool chucks

>I have the "real thing"(Oneway). I also have a Woodfast center that came with my Stubby. Heck, I even have a cheapie center that came with my Jet Mini. I haven't had any problems with any of the lot.

As for the "bad" bearings in your Oneway, Oneway says they have to have a certain amount of free play.......which disappears under load.

>I read the same "stuff" on the Oneway site and the play doesn't go away under a load. I can crush the wood and still have radial play. I think it is more cheap bearings than by design (.50 vs $6.00) and don't really beleive their story. Radial play is measured in tenths or ten thousandth's of an inch and I have over four thousandth's under load. That is just lousy bearings. Over the years, I have used a large number of bearings in high performance model racing engines that have much higher lateral loads and never had that much lateral play. Even the real loose bearings were much tighter than the ones in my live center.

>My center doesn't seem to have any free play. You might ought to talk with the Oneway folks about a replacement.
