>...I just turned a pen from Purpleheart.The wood, after turning, looked really bland. While sanding however, the color started to change....the harder I sanded (more friction heat) the more color showed up. It finally got to purple. Was this a function of the friction heat, or because of where the wood came from (sap vs heart wood)? Do I always need to sand hard to bring out the color? I now have a nice looking multi colored pen that I like, but I want to know how I got here.

>It has nothing to do with heat. If you leave this ugly thing in the window for a day or so it will turn a beautiful purple. When it gets to the color you want, finish it and it will maintain it's color.

However, it is light sensitive like Cherry, and turns purple from light (or heat from sanding). Finish it with a high UV protective finish as continued exposure to light will cause it to turn brown again.

>I've been wondering about this also. I have a few pupleheart pen blanks plus a whole bunch of gorgeous red stained box elder for turning stock.

What is a good UV protective finish for these applications? A friend suggested looking at clear automotive finishes because of their high UV protection - but don't know how that would work.

Any suggestions?

Heat definitely will 'color up' purpleheart. Leave a stick in your car for a few days and you'll see it change, even if it's out of the light. However, UV can also make it darken. Some guys that make pens will use a small torch to lightly darken the purpleheart. It'll even darken in the microwave. Sometimes even to black (and smoldering) - but don't ask me how I know this.

>Bubba, I haven't seen any research on this, but just from personal experience, I suspect that the purple pigmentation in this wood results more from oxidation (or other atmospheric gas)than from exposure to light. When the wood is first cut, it is a light brown in color, but in a matter of hours it turns purple.

The pigments are, however, sensitive to light, but I think the effect of light is to convert the purple pigmentation toward redish brown and this process is much slower than the one which causes the initial purple color to develop. The effects of light can be retarded by using a UV blocking varnish, but it is virtually impossible to preserve the purple color indefinitely.

The chemistry of this wood is indeed mysterious. Purpleheart is often used for dock pilings...and when used in this marine environment the wood turns almost jet black. Whether it is a reaction to salt or some dissolved mineral in sea water, I don't know...but I suspect the black pigmentation results from a mineral (probably iron), since iron has this effect on woods that are high in tannin, such as the oaks.

As for what heat does, it might play some minor role in accelerating the chemical processes that actually form the pigments...but the darkening effect it seems to contribute probably relates more to what heat does to the gums in the wood. As in cherry and other gummy woods, purpleheart does seem to be a little sensitive when it comes to friction burning. If the rate of feed isn't steady and/or the cutters are dull, you quickly pay for your inattention.

I've turned purpleheart that turned a reddish brown in less than a year. On the other hand I've turned purpleheart that several years later is still very purple. A friend who is an importer of woods told me that where the wood grew has a lot to do with that. Purpleheart from Panama has different qualities than purpleheart from Brazil, etc.

>I think the color change differences you describe have more to do with which species of Peltogyne it is than where it grows. Of course the different species have different ranges, but there is lots of overlap. The problem is it's all sold as purpleheart.

>There are about 20 species in the genus Peltogyne and they are wide spread from Mexico to southern Brazil. So, both species and growing conditions appear to have a lot to do with quality. But I think Wally is also right. One of the best of the purplehearts comes from the Durian region of Panama and is sometimes marketed as nazareno.

The purplehearts have pores that are clogged with gum deposits. The gums tend to crystalize and leave the flatsawn surface with flecks that vary in color from a light gray to almost black. The darker the flecks, the nicer the overall color...in that the purple seems to be more vivid, if the flecks are dark.

Another very nice purpleheart comes from the Amazon region of Brazil and is often marketed as pau roxo.
