Stanley 51 Chute Plane Value?

Stanley 51 Chute Plane Value?

I recently got a Stanley 51 without the board. It's all as it should be, though has patina and marks of age. The frog is sound, all the screws turn, and the handle is solid. I'd like to determine the value for it since I may put it on eBay. It has paint loss on the high spots, like where the patent date, number, and Stanley name are. The sole(s) could probably use a going over with some emery cloth to make it shine,  and no doubt the blade needs sharpening, but it's a completely functional tool.

The last solid value I could find for it was $220-440 US, but that was over 15 years ago. I've tried eBay, but there's not much available for comps. All that seems to pop up is #51 spoke shaves

Can anyone suggest a good current source to help me price this thing? If you're interested I have some pics on imgur that I took right after I got it. I've since given it a light rub up with some WD40, an old toothbrush, and some shop rags to get the dust and old grease off it.

Anyhow, this is my first post here so thanks in advance.

You might try a search on "shooting plane". Also, Jim Bode tools has sold planes like this before. His prices are quite high and include shipping. You might estimate 75% of Bode's pricing since he is guaranteeing his products in addition to the shipping.

I would not clean that too much. It is not a dime a dozen tool like a #5 so may be worth more with the patina than without. The collectible tool market is very hot and I would expect to get more for that than you could get a new Veritas version if you did want a tool like that.

Thanks for the info. Mine's comparable to this one I think, so I figure 275-300.

I wasn't sure if the prices had gone up since the listing I saw on handplane.com (org?). Looks like they've stayed pretty stable for the last 15+ years.

I much doubt that the value of the #51 shooting plane will be more than around $300.

I have a Stanley #51/#52 combination.

Vintage tools are really only “valuable” if they are in pristine condition (unless extremely rare), and also fully intact - which, in this case, means having the #51 and #52 together as a package. In single form, I would argue that the #52 shooting board is where the interest and value lies.

Looking at values 15 years ago is likely misleading. Certainly the value of vintage tools has risen over the years, but this was before the manufacture of the LN #51 plane. Both the LN and Veritas versions of the #51 plane are leagues better as users. For those who actually want to use the shooting board, the original plane would have been replaced by a more modern one. This is what I did. This would drop the value of a lone Stanley #51 if the prices are similar to the LN and Veritas.

For all this, an intact #51 would make a good user ... just do so with care.
