Not sure about the flatness issue, but I've long said that as far as imparting polish the products used on precision optics make even the finest of fine woodworking honing media look almost quaint by comparison, and often at no more cost if not less. In other words, green crayons are junk.

Being extremely flat (as opposed to just being flat) is a marketing point for woodworking tools. The flatter the better (from a sales or promotion point of view).

I wasn't all that serious about working on woodworkers chisels this way; I just thought, after reading the Blue Spruce ad, that it is an interesting idea. Are you saying that you actually have some experience with polishing woodworkers tools this way? I know it would be extremely slow.
