That's what it seems like I observe with mine. At the risk of further stirring the honing oil pot, it does seem that when working a larger surface, like the back of a plane iron, if there’s more than a tiny amount of oil between metal and Stone I feel like I’m just skating on the oil and not getting much polishing done.
