Hello again all. Just rehabbing an old Stanley Mitre box and was wanting to take the saw apart to clean the plate and refinish the handle. 2 of the nuts came out perfect but the medallion nut just spins freely (actually the medallion spins with it to be precise. I believe that the square recess is probably rounded from a previous owner's ham-handedness but am flummoxed as to how to get it out. I tried putting some rubber on the medallion and then clamping the snot out of it with a handscrew before attempting to loosen it but no joy there.

Any thoughts or tips on removing that don't involve anything destructive towards the handle?

Guillaume, the metal thread/parts are also likely frozen/welded. I would pour in a little penetrating oil, and leave that for a while, and try again. If that does not work, apply heat to the screw via a soldering iron, and try again.

Thanks Derek,

Although free spinning the saw nut and medallion are too tight to pour oil in so will try the heat method and hope for the best.

If that doesn't work, I can just give up on my obsession with restoring to like-new condition and still have a perfectly serviceable user.

Back to the electrolysis bath, oiling, and painting for the actual miter box I go (I can only let go of obsession so much).

Got it free, heat did the trick but not for the reasons we would have thought (I wasn't thinking rust since nuts are brass).

The weirdest thing is that the saw seems to have left the factory with round holes in the handle and some glue applied to hold the nuts in place. The heat broke the bond of the glue that got in the threads for the medallion.

Never saw that one before
