When my grand daughter was born I decided to make a crib.
It was made from my favorite wood, American cherry. I used slip tenons for the slats and made the mortices with the mortice table on my old Inca table saw. The top rails of the head and foot boards were laminated from three pieces.
When designing the crib I looked at some commercial cribs and was happy to find that they could be converted to a full size bed. The length of a crib mattress is the same width as a full size bed. My grand daughter was out growing the crib so I made the new rails to do the conversion to a full size bed. So the rails replaced the crib head and foot boards and voila a full size bed:
