This from someone on another forum that I came across - I read intermittent bits of it so far looking for familiar things, but I see why some of the knife testing would lead to wanting to put more vanadium in plane irons (even though I think the quality of the edge that lasts a long time on these tests ends up below what we want for smooth planing).

No XHP/V11 on this list, but CTS-204P is on here, which I believe is a less tough but more alloyed version that's similar -the addition is vanadium (3 or 4% or something).

204P outran CPM M4 a little (which is probably expected as we found XHP and M4 in the same ballpark), and both ended up around double the distance cut of most carbon steels - some more - some a little less (this sounds really familiar from our tests!! M4 and V11 wore about twice as long in clean wood as O1)

Most of the other alloys, especially the high vanadium stainless types, etc, aren't really that interesting to us despite their high numbers (fine edge holding doesn't really exceed carbon steel, but ability to hold a duller edge is really great -carbon steels lose the fine edge and then cease being usable pretty soon - the exotic steels lose their fine edge and then continue to go for a long time).

Relative wear of O1 vs. A2 and super blue are almost identical to what we found, except the blue steel tsunesaburo blade didn't wear right and cut itself short. I suspected that if it hadn't shed carbides, it would last about as long as A2 (japanese tool fanatics find this offensive, but the reality is that nothing used in japanese planes has a longer edge life than standard steels of a similar alloy - edge quality and longevity are not totally attached to each other - distance planed was more related to alloy).

I this test, A2 and super blue were about the same for cardstock cuts before dull. Blue super would wear just a bit longer than Blue 1 if the two are done properly (blue 1 has about 1.3% carbon and I suspect the test iron let go of carbides because improper temperature cycling doesn't do anything to incorporate the excess carbon properly, and there will be a lot of it, and maybe to some extent, the bits coming out could be tungsten.)

One last interesting point - cliff stamp did a test with CPM Rex - it didn't have good edge stability. It's a "transition" material, almost carbide. The lack of edge stability caused early failure and resharpening was beyond nuisance. However, in a controlled test like this one, the machine doesn't apparently tax the edge that much and it doesn't fail or chip, so it wins.

XHP is known in the knife world, but it's not nearly as common as the vanadium carbide steels mostly because they are far more common in production knives (likely due to availability). It's not a surprise that it's not shown in this test - it's hard to find at retail and one of the retailers using it about 8 years ago switched all of their XHP knives to S30 or S35.

The conclusion in most knife forums is that even from tests like this, carbon steel knives are antiquated. There's a lot of topical matter on purchasing and testing knives, but the general knife maker subforum is literally empty of any non-archived topics.

This may be part of the reason that edge quality is more important in woodworking. I'm not going to go test this on an iron in need of resharpening by our standard, but I'm guessing they could still give you a pretty clean cut easily!

Maybe another reason that CPM-Rex, etc, does as well in the tester - the initial edge departs, but what's left is a pile of dull carbide.

(I thought my test was pretty thorough - this guy horse traded for a knife testing machine and had several dozen blades made and then tested them all. That's serious!).

Note on availability of XHP irons

What is supply availability of XHP?

I’ve been ordering PMV-11 irons for Stanley planes, from LV. Waited about 6 weeks for last 1-3/4” blade for a #3.

Just checked LV for PMV-11 iron waits: online orders for 1-3/4” waiting til April 29; for 2-3/8”, til April 2. For 2”, LV shows as available now (word to the wise).

The XHP iron you sent is mighty happy in an LN4 bronze.

..is where I got my stock (it's carpenter, of course - the website is, I'm guessing, a retailer who stocks some of their goods but only limited sizes).

Your blade is about .094, as is mine, as is all of them.

As you can see, you can have many different sizes of xhp as long as you don't care that they're all finish ground to .093, or just descaled at .103 (assuming that's the same thing with or without grind).

The same was true when I bought my stock - actually is a nice thickness for a slab-type (similar to the japanese blade that I showed a picture of). I'm waiting on a toaster oven to finish temper that one, it's still hard tempered - I guess shipping volume is high, so no go this weekend. I have mules of a smaller size again in the white rikizai, 1084 and XHP waiting. I think it will make a nice kitchen knife.

I believe cold steel was the company making a lot of knives in XHP (could be wrong, I'm not a knife guy -especially contemporary types), and their notification that they were having trouble sourcing XHP and would be switching to S30V or S35VN for all of the XHP patterns was around 2011/2012....

....about the same time LV started selling V11 irons :)

We need it more than the knife people, anyway!

If the kitchen knife turns out nice, I'll make a couple more between chisels and send them around. It may be difficult to come up with 6 or 8 inches of 1900 temperature steel in a short period of time (unflattering things happen with the XHP if it's kept in open atmosphere for long -I found that out with one of the mules - probably already mentioned that several times, and if so, my apologies for repeating!)

I have corresponded with this person. A research scientist tackling the issues of cutting edges leads to good, and reliable data and myths busted. One could look at his data and make good choices for chisel and plane blade steel. It shows why were were directed to CPM 3V for chisels. I found his other articles equally informative.

I think (though I haven't had any conversations other than a short back and forth) that he feels that S90V would be longer lasting in a plane than anything we're using.

I also see that its toughness is half of XHP, which itself can end up losing superiority in slower grinding and honing if the work is less than ideal (contaminants, etc). Or at least some of it.

It looks like S90V is something that I could quench and temper. My can forge with mapp will get to 1900F by color pretty quickly (which i'm sure most people would say BS, but I have the proof in irons made and tested :b that they're on par with V11). S90V has a faster transition requirement, so it would harden well in oil, I'm sure (i have aluminum plates for plate hardening, too, but no need). Tempering temperature for the upper hardness range is doable. It would probably take 4 hours and ruin 6 files for me to make an iron out of it, though.

(I didn't finish the thought above - S90V needs to be at 2050 before quench - I have an oxy mapp setup that I could use in addition to one of the mapp torches to get a small area to 2050 easily and in a hurry).

Our needs are always a balance of wear and toughness. He makes that point in his discussion but not as forceful as it needed to be made.

.. I found S90V bar cheap enough that it wouldn't be a big deal to make irons out of it, but its toughness is so low that I'm not really inclined to try it (half of XHP and a quarter of 3V).

It would actually cost less for S90V than XHP. Larrin mentioned S90V not based on toughness, but due to the fact that his carbide examination shows that it has smaller carbides than XHP.

It would be interesting to fool with as would 10V in a plane iron (also to test my theory that more vanadium means more planing resistance at the same sharpness), but not interesting enough given the toughness data.

I see in separate discussions that Larrin also covers hardness and angles and edge stability (warning the same thing we're aware of - that normalized wear results can mislead if other factors aren't accounted for)
