Extra large sandstone grinding wheel *LINK*

Couldn't help paying another visit to Colonial Homestead in Ohio. There was an old sandstone grinding wheel exceptionally large, about 6.5" wide. There were a couple more, measuring about 2" wide.

It may be a life job to dress such a stone and a real chore moving this beast once soaked in water.

that one looks like it was probably a low speed wheel given that it's not dressed and it's sitting dry on a light weight stand.
I did notice in urban explorer pictures that the old George Barnsley works in sheffield there were several large silicon carbide wheels sitting around in good shape (just filthy from sitting). I guess those things aren't even valuable enough at this point for someone to steal.
While I got all giddy at the sheffield job grinder video, I realize (in forging a couple of files into chisel blanks this past weekend) that I can forge and hand (vixen) shape a chisel in a half hour, so I have no real practical need for wheels of that type. The idler on a belt sander makes a good spot removal tool on the hardest of steel, and to use to remove dirt and oxidation (Scale or filthy file teeth) to make sure that it doesn't get in the forged tool.
Getting a bolster (octagonal) neatly on a chisel is a different matter, but probably also one that I won't solve.

I was my mother's grain mill turner when I was a boy and she was making corn dumplings. I didn't particularly liked the activity. This one probably was some farm boy's plight.
