What direction to make scratches?

Say one is sharpening with two abrasive sizes. Relative to the edge of the blade, is there a preferred orientation of the scratches to the edge, and one another? Is there data to support answers?

No data, just observation. With really tiny finishing particles, it doesn't matter much. With less fine methods, scratches oriented perpendicular to the edge seem to fare better for sharpness and lack of damage.
