I would like to propose the following

Unicorning and Unicorn Profile- The sum of the unconventional bevel angles ground on the tool plus the refinement of buffing just the tip to establish the Unicorn Profile. (What David does)

Unicorning-Lite and Unicorn-Lite Profile - After conventional sharpening the refinement of buffing just the tip to establish the Unicorn-Lite Profile

Buffing Buffing the whole bevel to simply sharpen the tool. This operation is not Unicorning. It does not provide all the benefits of Unicorning.

The need for this clarification of terminology is becoming important. Unicorn and Unicorn-Lite are clearly different. In discussing what one is doing either in text or by name the reader needs to know what kind of profile is in fact being discussed.

More significant, people are being found, or coming out of the woodwork, that claim to have been doing Unicorning for decades when if fact they were simply using a buffing of some sort, with details not explained, as a sharpening step on the whole of the bevel.

It struck me that professionals must have developed means of dealing with chisel tip damage when cross grain chopping. I began polling those I knew to describe in detail how they prepared a chisel for chopping away dovetail waste. The range of responses was surprising. As expected, some optimized the bevel angle. Some just sharpened as usual and lived with the damage. Unexpected one shop seemed to be Unicorning routinely and even suggested a buff wheel from a knife supply for the task. Another seemed to be Unicorning "when mortising hard dry wood", but this owner is cranky at times and shut down further exploration of details. As an aside, some carved and buffed the entire bevel of chisels and gouges.

Bill- I agree. Too many people on this forum claiming first discovery. If it's good and you're not holding back for patent filing, then write about it and share, dammit.

Needle movers

There are a great many examples in science where someone discovered something but this name is unknown beyond the circle scientific historians. These people never did anything with the discovery. The person credited with the discovery is the person that disclosed it to a wide enough audience that it moved the needle of scientific knowledge.

I once had a results oriented supervisor. If someone claimed to have an idea he would tell them when it made the company money they would get credit for the accomplishment. Ideas that never went anywhere were useless and were rewarded as such. In this case the "needle" was revenue.

In our case the "needle", as in needle on some "gauge" measuring something significant, is knowledge that improves one's ability to do their kind of woodworking. Want credit from your peers? Move the needle.

Granted, I chose a different method of initial preparation of the tool(scraper) and the included angles are far blunter, the intent was the same though. A method of quick (seconds) buffer refreshment of a highly refined edge that creates(incidentally) micro bevels at the tip, provides superior performance and edge longevity over sharpening alone. In my application it is easier(time wise) to prepare a longer section of the top bevel than a scant millimeter of the edge. Like you, I prefer to work with my tools when I have the opportunity, not fiddle about for an hour, when I could be making something. Also, the steel I'm using is high carbon recycled leaf spring. I like it when it has less surface area to trap water & start rusting. But, after the prep is done, all I need to buff is that very edge (several times), until it requires contortionist movements or becomes so obtuse as to no longer cut. Then it can be honed a time or two before regrinding the bottom bevel is necessary. I use this on skews as well, but haven't tried it on any gouges.

So a difference that makes no difference, is what?

Kudos to David for having the courage to bring his edge treatment out in public. My comments are validation not repudiation. The edge treatment has broader applications than you initially thought. Now you have given the world terminology for a process that I'm quite certain lots of people before me also stumbled upon, but obviously had no nomenclature to describe what they were doing for the "I've never seen that, it'll never work" crowd.

Will it work for drill bits as well? Hmm...
