First, ask Wikipedia, to make sure it is a plinth that you want to design. Wiki synonymizes it with "pedestal". If the pedestal is non totally unobtrusive, like a flat black painted toe kick under a kitchen cabinet, you might start by looking at designs for a "library base." Regrettably, there is lots more chaff than wheat returned from that search, but don't give up. Ask Google Image Search to show you either "pedestal" or "plinth".

I kept wondering if plinth was actually the word I was looking for but couldn’t think what else to look under (no pun intended). In the time between posting this and now, however, my wife told me she wants a solid base so nothing will roll under it.

Solid top necessary?

So the magazine shows a solid board, or maybe plywood, across the top of the base. I imagine it gives it a bit of strength. I was just wondering how necessary that piece is. Would the boxes be supported enough with just four sides of a solid base piece? A box perpendicular to the other boxes as it were. I’m thinking that just support along the edges would be fine especially since it will only be like 4 inches tall.
