Saw nest specs

Ron in Kokomo

For those of you who make furniture with hand saws... Would you share the make-up of your saw nests. TPI. Set, etc. I am having to learn about this stuff.

I don't let mine nest; they get lazy

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

I make them perch on dowels.

Wish I could help, but my furniture making has been limited by the carpentry demands of our house.

I will comment that, were I making furniture with grunt-powered saws, I would sure have both rip and crosscut saws. It's amazing how fast a rip saw can cut with the grain.

I've got a saw problem. I have way more saws than I need. I have rip and crosscut for 10", 12", 14" and 16" back saws which I have configured on a lazy susan so I can easily get to them. My hand and rip saws are in a till and consist of 10 and 8 ppi and two rips at 5 1/2ppi. I have many other saws hanging around here and there which still have no home. When I go to bed at night they get busy and the next morning there's even more of them. The table saw sleeps with one eye open.

I almost forgot, I have a 7ppi crosscut for rough cutting.

This list is not a minimalist's, but

I'm also not Ron Herman, whose working set runs to 300 saws.

Leaving aside bow saws and compass saws, let's break them into unbacked and backed saws.

Unbacked: rip saws at 3tpi, 5tpi, and 11 tpi. X-cut at 5 tpi, 8tpi, and 12 tpi.

In time these six saws will become 12; six with little set for well-behaved wood, six for wet DF.

Backed: rip saws at 8", 12" and 16". X-cut at 12" and 16". All with little set for well-behaved wood.

These let me do an amazing range of sawing. And I do like buying saws...
