OT - scratched DVDs - Fix?

Denis Chnard, Orlans, Ont.

>With three young boys around DVDs often don't get the treatment they should (among many other things...). This ends up with scratched DVDs that become unplayable. Someone at the video store told me that you can use a common household product to restore the DVD by leveling scratches, making the discs playable again. Problem is, I don't recall what the product is. I think it was Pledge or some other furniture polish, but I'm not sure.

Before I attempt anything, does anyone know what product to use?

Thnx,

DC

>Hi Denis,

I use scratch romoval paste on my pens, a product called Novus 2. I have used it with success on a DVD with a clean shop towel and some patience.... clean is important, making new scratches is easily done if the towel is contaminated... A friend used the lens cleaning cloth that came with his glasses and teh same paste, trial and error ...

Take care

Jim

Tell me about teh gathering in Late April in Ottawa, some of us are interested in coming!

>They sell a thing that polishes them, about 30 dollar up here. Often the scratched DVDs we get from the library just need a solid cleaning, with windex etc.. They are covered with all kinds of marks, but the pops are coming from dirt.

Gathering

>I am not part of this one, I'm retired from plane orgies :-)

Seriously, the event is organized by the Ottawa Woodworkers Association, I'm just consulted about my experience with the previous two events. There will be a web site up, as soon as I find out about the final details I'll post them here.

It sure would be fun to finally meet!

Cheers,

>Denis,

I have had success restoring video game DVD's by wiping the scratches with Brasso polish and clean paper towels.Start from the center hole and work out to the edge in straight lines accross the disc.I ahve also heard of toothpaste working as well but I cannot say for sure because I have not tried that method.Novus will work as well but not every market has that handy.Brasso can be bought at my local grocery store as well as any of the Borgs.

I can't help with a home remedy but,

>The local DVD rental place had a machine that polishes them. Look like one of the new platter type sharpening systems. For a buck or two depending on the scratches the owner will polish up personal dics.

>I have repaired many of them. I use the MicroMesh abraisive cloth. I use it for all sort sof things actually. I get teh assortment of small pieces for $17 or so. I also use any ultra fine polishing compound (one in particular starts with an M I think?). I use some water as lube. As mentioned above, cross contamination between grits is real easy. Once I get one "fixed," I usually make a copy of it real quick. I've noticed some cd players are more forgiving tahn others too. I rarely carry originals around and I'mnot so careful with my copies, so they tend to get scratched a lot!
