I like my wooden brace and it looks appropriate with my other tools, but it doesn't hold every bit super well. Strictly from a utilitarian perspective, I prefered my old stanley ratcheting screw jawed chuck brace. It was small. So many folks seem to have these huge, monster braces. I think they are just too big and heavy for a 3/8" center bit. "Dammit Jim. I'm a cabinetmaker, not a timberframer!". But the head broke (repreatedly). It would fall off at inoppurtune times, costing me a center bit or shell. Finally, the metal frame came right through the head so I shelved it and switched to my wooden brace.

Klingler wrote an Article entitled "Amaerican Braces in the 19th Century" which was printed in three parts in the June, September, and December 1988 issues of the CHRONICLE, published by Early American Industries Association. There is only a small amount of discussion about the Sheffield type braces mentioned above, but a ton of info on the 19th century braces.
