Drawbore Pin Help!
Chuck Nickerson
>After watching a Chris Schwarz DVD, I decided to try a M&T drawbore joint. (At 53 I should know better than to wound up by 30 minutes of video, but...) So out to my shop I went, rived off a dozen pieces of oak(don't know if it's red or white), unwrapped my Lie-Nielsen dowel plate, and went to town. An hour later I had no useable material. The pins split, broke, and took on a very lazy Z shape. My guess is that my mallet blows have some sideways force that are preventing success. Has someone else successfully wrestled with this problem? Are some pieces of oak better suited than others? Does the dowel plate need to be fettled? A lower workbench? A mallet with angled faces?
