>How is it that applying candle wax to the sole of a plain doesn't contaminate the surface? Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

I don;t know, but I routinely wax the soles of my jointer and moulding planes as well and it really does help them move easier over the wood.
(and by jointer I mean a stanely #7 that I use not only for edge jointing but also for flattening my stock)

>I use Parfin (canning) wax on my plane soles. Also I use oil based finishes. I've never had a issue with contamanation. I think the wax is actully planed off as you go along. Also I don't wax the plane when making the final passes with a smoother.

>No idea, except I use furniture wax and buff it to a shine - and the layer is then, I understand, very very thin, probably not enough to make trouble.
