Daily Bread / CD Cabinet

>This is a project from about 2 years ago. I have to wait until 8 am to start hammering in my furnace room, so I have to do something.
After 25 years of fine service our pastor was moving on to a different job. "Daily Bread" is a small devotional booklet put out by Radio Bible Ministries I think, a very good way to start your day. These booklets have a little story for every day of the year and our pastor saved a large number of these and filed them according to subject. He had several overflowing little drawer cabinets that sufficed but were not really sized right for the pages. His secretary had asked me to build something to store the pages in and originally I was just going to make a small desktop drawer unit built to stack more drawer units on top as it was necessary to expand. When we found out he was moving on to a different job, the scope of the project increased considerably when I suggested to my sunday school class that we raise some money for the materials and I would build him a special cabinet. The cherry was cut locally and donated by one of the members. The rest of the sunday school class donated enough money to pay for Blum Tandem undermount drawer slides and soft maple drawer boxes and knobs from Lee Valley and off we went to the races.
As I was designing it I thought it would be a little silly to make a cabinet that would last for several thousands of centuries and only had one purpose so I decided make sure the compartments in the drawers were also large enough to hold CD's. I'm sure people will be needing to store those for the next couple centuries ;) I wanted to have some sort of stop in the drawers so that the compartment depth could be adjusted to keep the pages or cd's upright. I made slots in the drawer bottoms and put in a simple board with a bolt and wing nut. One thing that gives the piece some great memories for me is the size of the top drawer front. I had one board that I thought was just wide enough to get the grain pattern and shape that I wanted. The first time I fit it into the opening I just quit for the day and went and bashed my head against a wall. I decided to use it even though it was too small since the only alternative I could think of at the time was to glue on a piece at the bottom, and I did not have any glue lines in any of the other drawer fronts. Size is 51-1/4" high, 24-1/8" wide, 21-1/2" deep. The finish is 3 coats of turpentine/BLO/poly rubbed out and waxed. So here you have it; a Daily Bread / CD cabinet in the shaker style.
