The performance issue disappears if you don't require the board to sort the messages like the new default.

Mixed order
You'll also see the threads displayed the "old" way (which I greatly prefer)

I've been using Opera for years, along with Firefox and it's predecessors. I very reluctantly keep an old version of Explorer on this XP system. It's a Sony, 3Gb Intel Pentium 4, 512mb RAM, with 200+Gb of disk. Running broadband AT&T Dsl at 3+mbps. The latest service pack is loaded, as are the rest of the Microsoft updates. Antivirus is McAfee. There's a hardware firewall.
Everything else works.

Of course there are boards where the views are in the thousands per post, but the kind of places I visit run one messager/ten-twenty views, it seems. At those levels it's more like asking to be paid for shooting targets at the midway because one is an entertainer...

I;m in guesbook format so you post appears about 100 inches from the ads, and they aren't visible. (note to Ellis, they shouls track the screen as we go down or I will never see them)
I am noticing a problem when in gustbook, if I click on message 25 in the list, it still goes to the opening message, even if I leave it for a while, so it may or not be a time loading problem. If I just scroll and don't wait, the message I want is there, so I don't see why that is a loading issue.

But I find that index page way way way overwhelming. I open up the web site and I feel as though I am being blasted away. I found that having a split screen (upper/lower) to be reasonable way to control the stimuli.

I am posting this message in Opera, and I tried all of the messages that I posted and they all load the same as any others. When you say hit the reload button, what do you mean? What happens that makes you hit that button? Hangs, nothing happens when you click ....... Just trying to duplicate the issue so that maybe I can figure out what is going on. Thanks for the patience.

I agree that the left side of the screen should stay put. Now only the menu stays put, and the Wood Central logo as well as the ad disappears as soon as I scroll down (pretty well immediately). This doesn't change much for me, but Wood Cetnral and the major sponsor don't benefit from it at all.
Anothre feature that is slightly annoying and should be tweaked: when I click "back" after reading a message, the screen returns to the top of the hand tools page. It should, like in the old format, return to where I left off, i.e. to the thread I am reading. When it returns to the top I have to find the thread again after each message, which can be quite time-consuming (I prefer to click back after each message, not follow the thread on the links at the bottom of a message).
Sorry I can't provide more feedback, I'm a little busy these days.

Since some other readers aren't having the problem, I thought that it might be my browser, so I checked some others sites. When I go to a link, it is later marked as "read" by a different color font. For some reason, WoodCentral still isn't doing this (and it used to). So I thought I'd give you some specifics for troubleshooting purposes. I'm using Safari 3.0.4 on a MacBook with OS X 10.4.11. We held our collective breaths and waited it out. In time, most everyone has become used to the changes. A few haven't, but then that is life.

In my case, I found a way to make WC act like BP; and I can't do that today. So maybe I'll stick around, maybe not, but WC certainly can't be my main squeeze in this format, it's now just like all the others.

And it was working 100% fine prior to the format change.

I was really frustrated in posts with a huge sea of replies (like this one!) that I spent a lot of time scrolling around. I was also frustrated about the slow response time and the need to keep going back to the previous page when the link was available in the other frame.
Now that the speed issue has been resolved (much faster now!!!!), I needed to figure out what was bothering me about going back to the previous page. The problem is mainly the need to move the mouse up to the top of the page to hit the "back" button. There's a "back" button on my keyboard that I've never really found a need to use before now. But using the mouse in one hand and the "back" button in the other hand makes browsing WC much easier to do.
One benefit of this new format: Sometimes people refer to a thread "above" this one when the thread was really "below" in my reverse order format. Now that everyone has the same format, "above" means the same thing to all users. :-)
