>I have seen the Todd Herrli video. The lamination that Todd does is to make quartersawn beech stock since it is so hard to find. He makes planes and teaches building planes in the traditional manner with hand tools like floats. His planes are very nice and well made. The other difference is that he shows how to make the cutters from standard O1 stock; it is not tapered in thickness like traditional cutters. I don't know of a way to taper the cutters easily and I doubt if it is shown how in the new DVD. Perhaps the plan is for LN to market tapered cutter blanks.

Just for starters, I doubt I could find the carefully selected and dried beech that Larry has access to.

On the other hand, paying $40 is probably worth the unique experience of watching a highly skilled plane historian at work.

I can see a space for it though since the Herli video has a lot of little nigling things that aren't quite correct atmo. These are mostly in the woodworking aspect, not as to how the plane turns out in the end. I would prefer to see some other kind of western plane covered.

Herli laminates the stock, which I wouldn't do because I think the end result is prettier with solid stock, and I know where there is some very nice stuff... Just have to get off my... I sorta thought he probably did it in order to permit the rest of us, since I have never seen full thickness beech for sale, despite the fact there are plenty of trees and local suppliers sell bow bamboo, rod bamboo, ossage for bow blanks, and lots of semingly equally recherche stock.

I saw Herli's video last night. I remember it was positively welcomed when it first came out. Did any of you build some hollows and rounds?
