Guess I'm Lucky

Todd Hughes

>Picked up a pretty good plane yesterday at my every week auction......Went with my friend Leigh and while lots of stuff not to much for us, she got a nice Roy Croft book and I picked up a very nice older split nut open handle dovetail saw along with a box of etc. for $5 but not to much else.

.... We had lunch and then looked over the junk again. Looked in this wooden tool tote that mostly had just junk in it when there laying alng the side was.....a Stanley 196 Curved Rabbet plane !

...Simply amazing, this is a very rare plane, not made for that long of a time and a very specialised tool with few gettingsold. this one was complete and in excellent plus condition..Really goes to show you that you have to look good EVERYWHERE at places like this for stuff because you never know what you might find..

...We staked it out to keep thieves from stealing it which is very common at this auction, someone stole a no. 9 a few months ago I wanted. Auctioner came down the row and some guy had pulled it out but didn't know what it was because I got it for $40 !

....Leigh was very excited when I told her it is probably worth around $1,500 - $2,000

I'm kind of superstitious but I've always thought that things get "sent" to you that you are supposed to get. Been thinking but for what ever reason I guess I live a pretty lucky life ....well at least some of the time!

...Anyway here is Leigh holding the plane smiling big and looking cuter then a dead kitten as my grandmother would say .....Todd

You've just beat David Miller's gloat

>of course, he's been so busy out there in Iowa fighting off presidential candidates, he probably hasn't had the time to look for tools like you have, Todd.

>Ah, with Todd you can never be sure what the gloat's about. I bet the girl is the main gloat here. :)

>With the number of sales you go to, and the knowledge to know what you see, I think you're making your own luck, Todd. (*)

In fact, I'd say the only piece of luck here was that nobody else recognised it.

>I found myself digging deeper into boxes under tables at the local flea market yesterday. The odds are good that things like that plane can be found in my area. This area is rich in used tools. The only problem is that there are just too many places to look and so little time. The time I spent at the flea market I should have been finishing the Christmas present I'm working on. I have no doubt that Todd would do well around here.---Jack
