>I've been trying to learn a little about Stanley Gage Planes, but the information available on the net is a little sketchy. I've learned that there was a company founded by a man named Gage who made a bunch of planes that resemble Bailey pattern planes, but appear to have a unique blade adjusting mechanism. Then, apparently Stanley bought him out and continued to make the planes for a while. It seems that the blade is unique and not interchangeable with a Bailey style blade.

I'd like to know how well they perform and whether they are as good as, let's say, a bedrock plane.

Any information would be appreciated.

I don't have much to add about the history of Gage planes, but here are a couple pix of my G4....

The plane seems to work fine, no complaints really. That annoying 'Bailey' blade slip doesn't happen after the first pass and the depth adjustment seems a little more precise.

I haven't spent a lot of time pushing this plane so I can't give a 'Cohen-esque' revue. It did all that was asked of it on pine and some domestic hardwood.

Swoopy sides give it a high neato factor and an illusion that there is plenty of room around the tote for a big mitt...but I'm here to tell ya the adjustment knob will raise a blister on your knuckle in no time.

Does it work better than a Bedrock? Hard to say but I'd think not...the Gage G4 feels like a light duty tool compared to a 604, and you're not likely to find one of those hi tech, super thick aftermarket blades for it.

If I saw a Gage and a Bedrock at the flea and only had the $10 for one of them, the Bedrock would win everytime.
