>Was just reading Lee Valley's reprint of the 1909 Popular Mechanics Shopnotes and found, page 832 (their page numbering seems based on combining multiple years into one volume, so 1909 starts with page 807), a suggestion for linking two screws on a carpenter's vise with a bicycle chain so that they operate in synch. The drawing shows what appears to be the movable jaw of a leg vise, with the lower screw replacing the pinned strut commonly used.

So, in two years, that'll be at least a century old idea...hmmm...

>Certainly all LV did was offer the idea for sale. It is a pretty good mechanism, I like mine. There were several version in the Landis book. I'm not sure about it on a leg vise where the lower guide is mostly there as a sort of fulcrum, there seem to be faster acting mechanisms than the chain/double screw style.
