>Was just reading Lee Valley's reprint of the 1909 Popular Mechanics Shopnotes and found, page 832 (their page numbering seems based on combining multiple years into one volume, so 1909 starts with page 807), a suggestion for linking two screws on a carpenter's vise with a bicycle chain so that they operate in synch. The drawing shows what appears to be the movable jaw of a leg vise, with the lower screw replacing the pinned strut commonly used.
So, in two years, that'll be at least a century old idea...hmmm...
