Crossed off my list of things to make

A hat stretcher. The center handle is soft maple and held with a garter in one end and threaded in the other end. Ends made of pine.

I suspect it isn't an article of clothing

>Robert,

While a garter will keep up your stockings, in this case it retains the handle. A small groove is turned near the end of the round tenon on the end of the handle, opposite the threads. A small wooden peg (garter) retains the handle in the end piece, so it stays together.

Same word origin.
