Workbench feet -- which style?

There's the basic "four legs on the ground" style, much like a regular table:

And, there's the "beams on the ground" style:

Also, I've seen variants of the "beams on the ground" style where the middles of the beam are relieved a little, so that there are 4 areas of contact:

I'm sure that there are real names for these styles, but I don't know what they are.
Before I embark on building my "real" workbench, I was wondering if there were pros and cons between these styles. The only difference I see is the issue of long grain vs. end grain being in contact with the ground. But I could easily be missing something.
